      The Gupta polity became layered because of the strategy adopted by the rulers. Military: The invasions and conquests of the Guptas, the appearance of the designation of Sandhivigrhika for the first time as also of the official title of Mahabaladhikrita mentioned in the epigraphs presupposes that the Guptas maintained a standing army. The title Arthashastra is often translated to "the science of wealth (अर्थ)", but the book Arthashastra has a broader scope. It includes books on the nature of government, law, civil and criminal court systems, ethics, economics, markets and trade, the methods for screening ministers, diplomacy, theories on war, nature of peace, and the duties and obligations of a king.

        The book covers Indian history from Paleolithic (stone) age of hunters and food gatherers, to the early medieval age symbolizing the rise of Bhakti sect. It also gives an in-depth knowledge of Harappan civilization, Vedic period, the glory of Maurya and Gupta period, and an insight into Buddhism and Jainism.   They succeeded the Mauryan Empire in Magadha. Pushyamitra Sunga was the first king of this dynasty. 2. Indo-Greek Kingdom (BCE – AD) – North West India. The Greeks were the first foreign power in the sub-continent.
